Along with innovative content production practices, students also explore traditional journalistic foundations, including news writing, investigations, crime reporting, media literacy and techniques for verifying and spotting disinformation.

Unlike traditional desk jobs, journalism offers an exciting career where no two days are the same.  Student journalists take on the big stories, like travelling to Indonesia to investigate shark fishing or speaking to celebrities, politicians and sporting greats.

Graduates then move into a dynamic industry experiencing exponential growth - particularly in areas such as podcasting - and are sought after not just in newsrooms but in the corporate and not-for-profit world too.  After all, the skill to critically analyse and ethically report has never been more valuable.

What to expect when you study Journalism

The Journalism major gives students the opportunity to work in an online newsroom where the core of the program considers the press and news media as a powerful societal force.  With a focus on creating content with integrity and grounded in facts, students will gain a portfolio of published works by the end of the course.

From your first year, you will be immersed in digital news gathering. You will learn to report accurately on important issues while creating podcasts, multimedia, interactive graphics, feature stories and video packages to industry standards with a focus on adaptability and innovation in a rapidly changing media landscape. Journalism is an exciting journey where award-winning reporters and experienced academics support you to look in the right places, conduct interviews and write creatively in state-of-the-art labs.

You will learn the power of credible sources and verification, how to gather evidence to expose wrong-doing and the ability to think on your feet in a landscape where social media and cross-platform capabilities are all part of the training.

In your final year, you will produce a portfolio of published work for the independent Quenda news website, as you build a strong list of contacts that empower you to conquer the world. 

Students can also immerse themselves in exchange programs, international experiences and develop the skill to critically analysis the world around them.
