2026 MRIWA PhD Scholarships - Now Open
The Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) is a state government agency which provides funding into minerals research which delivers value to WA. Part of our remit is to provide a range of competitive scholarships to support exceptional candidates pursuing postgraduate research in any research topic relevant to the minerals industry in Western Australia. Our PhD scholarship recipients explore a range of topics from a variety of disciplines, from investigating psychosocial capital in the mining workforce to decarbonisation in steelmaking.
We offer 4 types of scholarships:
- MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship open to all applicants including domestic and international students, and is offered to the highest ranked PhD candidate
- MRIWA PhD Scholarship for Women open to women PhD applicants
- MRIWA PhD Scholarship open to all PhD applicants including domestic and international students
- MRIWA Indigenous Postgraduate Research Scholarship open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate students.
Eligibility
To ensure your application can be deemed eligible for assessment please ensure you:
- Complete all fields within the specified word limit
- Submit before the deadline (no late applications will be accepted)
- Sign and date the signature page of the application
- Provide responses in English.
How to Apply
Applications for funding must be made on the appropriate MRIWA PhD Scholarship Application Form. The form is accessible via the MRIWA website.
Late submissions will only be accepted with written approval by the Education and Workforce Program team prior to the close of the scholarships round.
Any submissions received after the deadline will be deemed ineligible for that round.
Applicants are to complete the online application and submit via email to scholarships@mriwa.wa.gov.au before 11:59pm (AWST) Tuesday 30 September 2025.
Required Documents
Attachments to be included with your application include:
- Evidence of application, enrolment or admission to the host university
- Evidence of suitable English language test results (if required)
- Signed endorsement letters from the proposed host university supervisor(s)
- Evidence of academic achievements including transcripts and certified translations (if required).
Payment Method
- a full award; or
- a top up amount provided in addition to other scholarship(s) awarded to the student, such as the Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship.
