GRDC PhD Stipend to Investigate Soil Water Repellency

This project will identify new techniques for rapid in-field determination of SWR at the paddock scale to identify spatial and temporal variations. Drone imagery of crop emergence can provide a proxy for identifying areas of SWR across a paddock. Imaging across multiple years will provide evidence of the impact of amelioration strategies and identify recalcitrant zones. Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques will be used to assimilate data from field measurements of SWR, soil properties, crop-related chemical properties, and seasonal climate data to build a model for predicting the severity of SWR before seeding.

Eligibility

  • An Honours or Masters degree with a thesis component in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated well-developed interpersonal skills to communicate with the interdisciplinary and collegial team and industry representatives.
  • Demonstrated high levels of written and oral communication in English and can demonstrate flexibility in communicating ideas in person and using technology.  
  • Demonstrated interest in agriculture and science.
  • Open to both domestic and international applicants. International students will need to meet English language proficiency requirements
  • Scholarship duration 3.5 years
